How to wash a Jellycat without ruining it

The care label says surface wash only. That is honest advice for a soft toy that is a year old. It is not much use on one that has been slept with every night since 2021, and the gap between those two things is why you are reading this.

You can machine wash most of them. Doing it badly is what causes the matting people are actually afraid of, and the damage from that is harder to undo than the dirt was.

Photograph to come

The same well-loved Jellycat photographed twice at identical angle and light: before, matted and grey; after, brushed out. Shot as a pair, not a collage.

Two situations where you should not do this yourself

There is something inside it

A music box, a squeaker, a growler, a battery pack, or weighted beads. Water gets into all of them and out of none of them. This needs someone who will open a seam, take the mechanism out, wash it, and put it back.

It has already been washed once and come out matted

A second attempt makes it worse every time. Matting is recoverable, but by steaming and working the pile back up, not by washing it again. Getting this wrong twice is how a repairable soft toy becomes a sad one.

Find someone who does de-matting

If neither of those applies, here is the whole method

  1. 01

Check what is inside it before anything else

Squeeze it all over. Beads, a music box, a squeaker or a battery pack all change the answer completely, and none of them survive a machine. If you find one, stop here and surface clean it instead.

  2. 02

Spot treat first, and give it twenty minutes

A little laundry liquid worked in with a soft toothbrush, on the marks only. Most of what people machine wash for comes out at this stage, which means the rest of it never has to happen.

  3. 03

Pillowcase, knotted, cold, gentle, no spin worth the name

The pillowcase is not optional. It stops the ears and the label taking the whole force of the drum. Cold, gentlest cycle, lowest spin. Non-bio liquid, half what you would normally use, no fabric softener because it coats the fibre and that is what makes it feel like a doormat afterwards.

  4. 04

Squeeze, never wring, then dry slowly and flat

Press it in a towel to get the water out. Then flat, out of direct sun, away from a radiator, for a day or two. Heat is what shrinks the backing fabric while the pile stays the same size, and that is where the permanent puckering comes from.

  5. 05

Brush it back out while it is still slightly damp

A slicker brush, the kind sold for dogs. Short strokes, following the way the fur already lies. This step is the difference between something that looks washed and something that looks flat, and almost nobody is told to do it.

It is too far gone for a wash to fix.

Bald patches, seams letting go, a flattened face, filling that has gone solid and lumpy. None of that is a cleaning problem. Tell us what happened and we will show you who takes this kind of work, and whether they are open.
